Here are 7 things you should have to start the journey as a seamstress. I will add some products suggestions, so if you don't know what to choose you can give it a look here. Leave a comment if you want some suggestions in particular.
#1 sewing machine
If you want to create completely hand-sewn garments, you don't need it, but if the tailor path is not in your mind, you need a sewing machine!
I started using the Singer sewing machine of my mother -that was old and it really made me get nervous a lot- then I changed to a Brother and my second one is also a Brother - as well the overlock one. Not to hide that I am a Brother lover ♥, Juki, Singer and Janome are good too!
Anyway, there are a lot of options and you don't need to buy a super expensive one to make professional clothes -it's the technique that matters! So here are some of good sewing machine to start.
Things to look: basic stitch, zigzag stitch (so you don't need an overlock machine), button holes stitch/feet. If you have these you have a good machine to start.37 Unique Built-in Sewing Stitches, Including a 1-step Auto-size Buttonhole

#2 fabric scissors
Invest in a good one because it will make a perfect straight cut with no effort! The Japanese ones are considered good solutions, but you can also go for other options. I suggest to choose a scissors 24-26cm long, it's more stable and you can have a better control of the cut.
Good price for these popular fabric shears.
Material: Stainless Steel

Even if I am living in Japan and I have easy access to good scissors, I am so into this one! I think my next buy will be this one. "They cut through multiple layers of fabric, leather, fleece, vinyl, denim, and other dense materials. " I need it. Check the thread cut scissors too!
This is not an expensive one, but a good choice to start! You can even cut leather easily. If you are going to buy this from Amazon Japan (ships in other countries too) I will suggest to buy also a thread cut scissor .
This is a more expensive choice, but a really good one. It is the one we use at work and the stability is so good.
Product Size: Blade length: 3.7 inches (94 mm), Total length: 9.4 inches (240 mm)
Material: High-grade blade steel
#3 measuring tape (& ruler)
You will need it to measure yourself, but also to measure some round parts like the arm hole or the collar in the pattern. You can use one you can find in a craft/hobby center.
with both centimeters and inches.
a good kit to start making patterns. You don't need it if you are just going to buy patterns.
#4 sewing pins or clips
Sewing pins and/or clips are a must to keep together 2 pieces of fabrics and sew.
I use both of them, depending on the fabric I tend to change between them. - With lightweight fabrics pins can make holes. -
#5 seam ripper
Your new best friend in this journey! Making mistakes is normal, you will have to redo some parts of a garments and to remove the stitch you will need it. You might get it with the sewing machine, so you don't have to buy it (I got mine with my Brother)
#6 hand-sewing needle
Baste is a part of making clothes pretty annoying but it is a technique that will make your skill way better, and anyway you need a needle to do some hidden stitches.
#7 chalk
The chalk is to mark the fabric, so it depends on the colour of the fabric and you need a colour that you can see. At least buy white and another colour.
And with these tools you are ready to start sewing! Check tiktok for short videos about tutorials and this blog for more deep contents.
